Region reports 202 cases; county’s death toll hits 260
Pa. counts 828 new COVID-19 cases
The Pennsylvania Health Department reported 828 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 35 more deaths, with the Pittsburgh region accounting for 202 of those latest infections.
In Western Pennsylvania, Allegheny County saw the highest single-day increase with 76 new cases. It was followed by Fayette County with 61 new positive cases and Erie County, 16. Tuesday marked the fifth straight day Allegheny saw fewer than 100 new daily cases.
The new statewide total is 120,281 cases since the pandemic started in mid-March.
Allegheny’s total number of positive cases now stands at 9,008. The newly reported cases in the county come from 986 tests administered between Aug. 4 and Aug. 10. Those who recently tested positive range in age from 7 to 94 years old, with a median age of 49, according to health officials.
The county also reported one death, a person in their 60s who died Aug. 7, and two more hospitalizations. With the additional patients admitted to the hospital for treatment, there have been a total of 737 county residents hospitalized since the pandemic started. The county death toll is now 260.
The state reported 35 more virus-related deaths, 10 of which were in Western Pennsylvania for a statewide total of 7,352 deaths.
Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine also announced OraSure Technologies Inc., a medical device company developing a rapid antigen self-test, will expand manufacturing operations in the Lehigh Valley.
OraSure’s test, which would detect active COVID-19 infection in 15 to 20 minutes, is expected to become available by the end of the year, said OraSure president and CEO Dr. Stephen Tang.
“One of the keys to stopping the spread of COVID-19 is access to testing,” Dr. Levine said. “We are currently testing about 4% of our population each month, but we need to do more.”
The company’s expansion will create 177 full-time jobs.
