1919 Three thousand streetcar men again walked off the job, this time in protest against War Labor Board’s award of a 6cents-an-hour raise, only half of what they asked.

1955 The city’s first heliport was establishe­d atop the Gateway Parking Garage at Fourth Avenue and Stanwix Street in anticipati­on of regular helicopter service between Downtown and the airports.

1971 President Richard Nixon announced a 90-day freeze on wages, prices and rents.

1996 Allegheny Ludlum, the largest maker of stainless steel in the United States, acquired Los Angeles-based Teledyne Inc., creating Allegheny Teledyne Inc. with corporate headquarte­rs in Pittsburgh.

2015 Japanese Emperor Akihito expressed rare “deep remorse” over his country’s wartime actions in an address marking the 70th anniversar­y of Japan’s surrender in World War II, a day after the prime minister fell short of apologizin­g to victims of Japanese aggression.
