1800 The city’s second newspaper, Tree of Liberty, was published by John Israel, with Hugh Henry Brackenrid­ge as chief backer and chief editorial writer.

1861 President Abraham Lincoln issued Proclamati­on 86, which prohibited the states of the Union from engaging in commercial trade with states that were in rebellion — i.e., the Confederac­y.

1920 Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians was struck in the head by a pitch thrown by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. Chapman died the following morning.

1956 A program to expend $81 million for additions to the National Tube Division of United States Steel in McKeesport was announced.

1977 Elvis Presley died at his Graceland estate in Memphis, Tenn., at age 42.

2000 Turner Dairy of Penn Hills discontinu­ed home delivery. It was the last local dairy to do so.
