State reports 829 new cases of COVID-19, 208 in region

- By Hallie Lauer

The Pennsylvania Health Department on Friday reported an increase of 829 new cases of the COVID-19 virus and 36 related deaths, with the Pittsburgh region accounting for 208 of those cases.

Allegheny County saw the highest single-day increase, with 90 new cases for Friday, followed by Erie County with 19 additional cases.

The statewide COVID-19 cases now stand at 122,950 people who have tested positive for the virus.

In eight of the past 10 days, Allegheny County has seen daily case counts of under 100 cases per day. The county now has 9,282 reported cases.

Health officials said the 90 new infections reported Friday come from 1,237 tests that were taken between July 31 and Aug. 13. Of those, 90% of the results were from the last week, according to the county Health Department.

Those who have recently tested positive range in age from 1 to 96, with a median age of 43.

The Health Department also is reporting that 41 of the 90 new cases are from a “one-time surge” of probable cases that have been identified but were not entered into the state tracking system, NEDSS.

“During the case surge in July, the Health Department made decisions to prioritize efforts on reaching contacts and providing guidance. Due to the volume, NEDSS information was not updated,” it reported.

As cases have been lower in the last week, the Health Department staff reviewed the probable cases from July and entered the ones that met their definition of a probable case.

Allegheny also reported 11 new hospitalizations and five additional deaths. The five deaths occurred from July 31 to Aug. 12. Three are related to long-term care facilities. The deaths were two people in their 70s and three people in their 80s.
