Injury woes continue

DJ LeMahieu is the latest Bronx bomber to hit the IL.

-

American League batting leader DJ LeMahieu was placed on the 10-day injured list by the New York Yankees on Sunday because of a sprained left thumb, joining Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the sidelines.

LeMahieu was hurt during an awkward swing in the fourth inning of Saturday night’s 11-5 victory against Boston and left the game two innings later.

He broke a small bone in the thumb in 2018 while with Colorado, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said LeMahieu told him the thumb felt similar.

LeMahieu did not play between May 13 to June 1 that year.

Blue Jays

Toronto placed shortstop Bo Bichette on the injured list a day after he strained his right knee in a suspended game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Manager Charlie Montoyo said Bichette hurt himself while stretching before an atbat and is undergoing testing, including an MRI. Bichette is batting .361, second best in the American League.

Twins

Randy Dobnak, a South Park native and a surprise right-hander who was promoted four levels last season before making a postseason start, continued his impressive run in 2020 with two runs allowed, both on solo homers, in 5⅓ innings in a 4-2 victory against the Kansas City Royals. Dobnak (4-1) gave up just three hits, while his ERA rose from a major league-best 0.90 to 1.42.

Diamondbacks

Arizona has won four games in a row and improved to 11-11, which is its first time at .500 since opening day. Starter Robbie Ray struck out Jorge Mateo in the third for his 1,000 career strikeout. The 28-year-old is the second fastest left-hander since 1913 to reach the mark, needing just 810 innings. The fastest was former Mets reliever Billy Wagner, who reached 1,000 strikeouts in 757⅔ innings.

Indians

Cleveland beat Detroit for the 20th consecutive time, nearing the major league record for most wins by a team over a single opponent, as Franmil Reyes hit two home runs to defeat the Tigers, 8-5. Baltimore holds the mark with 23 consecutive wins against Kansas City in 1969-70. The Yankees currently have an active streak of 18 wins against the Orioles.

Angels

Slumping 40-year-old Albert Pujols sat out backto-back games — the first time that has happened when he was healthy in his nine seasons in Anaheim. The three-time NL MVP recently reached 659 homers to move right behind Willie Mays for fifth place in baseball history, but he’s batting .186.

White Sox

Chicago tied a major league record with four consecutive home runs, all against reliever Roel Ramirez in his debut, and went on to beat St. Louis, 72. Ramirez is the first pitcher to allow four consecutive homers in his debut. Yoan Moncada, Yasmani Grandal, Jose Abreu and Eloy Jimenez connected in a six-run fifth inning.
