Magic-al opener

Orlando surprises East top seed Milwaukee in Game 1 of series.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The first shocking moment of the 2020 NBA playoffs came at the start of the second day when the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic upset the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks and reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Magic surprised the Bucks, 122-110, Tuesday as the No. 1 seed didn’t have the same defensive intensity Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer preaches. The Magic took a lead about four minutes into the first quarter and never trailed again. Orlando center Nikola Vucevic scored a career-playoff high 35 points and also grabbed 14 rebounds.

“I’m used to seeing that,” Augustin said about Vucevic. “I think, personally, he got a lot of bad negativity last year in the playoffs. I think this year is something different for him. He has something to prove, being a top guy in our league. He showed it tonight.”

Antetokounmpo put up a gaudy 31 points, 17 rebounds and 7 assists for the Bucks.

Other games

Heat 113, Pacers 101: Jimmy Butler does plenty of talking on the court to anyone who will listen: opponents, referees or teammates.

Luckily for Miami, Butler also listened. Bam Adebayo has been imploring him to shoot 3-pointers, and Butler knocked down two big ones late in the fourth quarter to help the Heat pull away in the opener of their Eastern Conference first-round series. Butler scored 28 and Goran Dragic had 24 for the Heat

Rockets 123, Thunder 108: James Harden had 37 points and 11 rebounds, and Houston rolled past Oklahoma City in Game 1 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series. Houston All-Star Russell Westbrook, who played his previous 11 years with the Thunder, was out with a quad injury.
