Toronto FC extends streak

Laryea helps raise unbeaten run to 17

-

Richie Laryea scored in the 17th minute and host Toronto FC extended its regular-season unbeaten streak to 17 games with a 1-0 victory on Friday night against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Toronto owns the fifth-longest unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer history and is two away from tying the 2004-05 Columbus Crew and 2010 Dallas FC for the record. Toronto ended last year’s regular season on a 10-game unbeaten streak and has gone 4-0-3 this year.

Laryea got his third goal of the season when he took a pass from Alejandro Pozuelo and beat Vancouver’s Thomas Hasal from just outside the box. Pozuelo picked up his league-leading seventh assist.

It is the second time in four days that Toronto has beaten the Whitecaps (2-5-0), who have dropped three of their past four.

Bertsch hit an approach from the rough near the back edge of a bunker that took some big bounces in front of the green and rolled to 20 feet from the back pin on Buffalo Ridge’s par-5 first hole.

• Scottish golfer Connor Syme moved into a strong position to make up for last week’s near miss at Celtic Manor by taking a twoshot lead after the second round of the Wales Open in Newport, played at the same venue on the European Tour. Smith was in a tie for second place with five other players: Li Haotong (66), Liam Johnston (68), Nacho Elvira (67), Sihwan Kim (67) and Sebastian Soderberg (70).

High school

Here’s one for the strange but true WPIAL basketball coaching situations. A coach leads his team to a WPIAL championship appearance, but it’s not enough to stop the school from opening his position a few months later. Then the school goes out and hires a coach who was let go from his job in June, despite guiding his team to the WPIAL semifinals the past three years. This is the story of Sto-Rox boys basketball, Ryan Hughes and Dwight Hines. Sto-Rox hired Hines as its coach Thursday night. Hines was Aliquippa’s coach the past four years and had three WPIAL semifinal appearances. Hines takes over at Sto-Rox for Hughes, who guided the Vikings to the WPIAL Class 2A title game this past season. But Hughes’ job wasn’t the only one opened in June because the Sto-Rox school board opened all coaching positions except football coach. That was done at the same time Sto-Rox hired LaRoi Johnson as athletic director. Johnson is the school’s football coach. Hines wasn’t the only hire made by StoRox Thursday. Kerry Connolly was named the new girls basketball coach for the Vikings. Connolly is a former standout at Sto-Rox who had more than 1,000 career points.
