- By Ed Blazina

Pennsylvania reported 843 new cases of COVID-19 across the state Saturday and 16 additional deaths.

The report from the state Department of Health pushes the total number of cases in the state to 132,834 and the number of deaths to 7,671 since the pandemic began in March.

The department said it continues to see increases in the number of virus cases involving people between 19 and 24 years old in each part of the state. The percentage of cases in that age group increased from about 5% of cases in April to 12% so far in August in the southwestern part of the state; from nearly 5% to nearly 18% in the southeast; from 6% to nearly 19% in the northeast; from about 7% to nearly 17% in north central; from about 7% to nearly 13% in south central; and from nearly 7% to nearly 10% in northwest.

In Allegheny County, the health department reported 83 new cases Saturday — the ninth day in a row below 100 new cases — and five new deaths.

The latest results, obtained from 1,512 tests taken between Aug. 18 and Saturday, push the county’s total case count to 10,211. The department reported 48 of the new cases occurred in people between 19 and 49 years old.

The new deaths, which occurred between Aug. 15 and Wednesday, push the total deaths to 330.

The department said the new deaths included one person in their 70s, three in their 80s and one in their 90s.

As a result of the reduction of new cases over the past nine days, the county health department announced Friday that the number of people who can attend outdoor gatherings has increased from 50 to 100 people.
