Pennsylvania on Tuesday reported more than 9,500 new cases of COVID-19, including 1,059 in Allegheny County.

Ten more people in the county died as a result of complications from the disease, including a 20year-old. They are among the 270 latest deaths reported statewide, the highest single-day total of the pandemic.

Westmoreland County also had 10 deaths to go along with 542 new cases. The county has been hit hard since the fall resurgence, with major outbreaks at its jail and county-owned nursing home.

And on Tuesday, Westmoreland reported county Commissioner Gina Cerilli has tested positive, meaning all three commissioners have now contracted the disease. Sean Kertes tested positive on Dec. 8, and Douglas Chew tested positive on Oct. 6.

Allegheny County’s deaths occurred from Nov. 20 to Dec. 14.

Besides the 20-year-old, Allegheny health officials said the additional deaths include two people in their 60s, three in their 80s, three in their 90s and one over 100. Five of the deaths were associated with long-term care facilities.

Of the county’s latest infections, health officials said 569 positive cases were confirmed from 2,395 PCR tests and 490 were probable. The cases were represented by people whose ages range from 3 months to 100 years, with a median age of 42. The positive tests were taken between Nov. 20 and Dec. 14, with two of the tests more than a week old.

The total number of county cases is now nearing 42,000 since the pandemic began in March. Also, there have been 675 total deaths and 2,580 hospitalizations. Of those hospitalizations, more than 600 required intensive care.

Statewide, the total number of cases has now topped 500,000 — 509,320 to be exact — and the death toll stands at 12,890.

Gov. Tom Wolf last week ordered a new round of business closures in an effort to contain the spread of the highly contagious virus surging throughout the country.
