Dark days for our democracy
These are dark days for our democracy.
I share the anger and outrage in conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg’s Dec. 12 column, “Texas AG’s Lawsuit Is a Shameful Display of Hypocrisy,” which condemned the Texas attorney general’s baseless appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. That case asked the court to invalidate election results in four other states and allow Donald Trump to steal the election. The Supreme Court summarily dismissed the case. History will clearly show that Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election by a wide margin in the Electoral College and by over 7 million votes nationwide.
Nevertheless, Mr. Trump continues to spread the big lie that, due to massive voter fraud, he actually won. In doing so, he hopes to bully legislators and judges to get them to overturn the election. Based on Mr. Trump’s utter disdain for the Constitution and the rule of law, his conduct, while reprehensible and un-American, is not surprising.
What is more dangerous for our country is that this groundless, unprecedented, unpatriotic lawsuit was joined in by 17 other Republican state attorneys general and 126 House Republicans, with the shameless goal of stealing the election and keeping their tribe in power.
All patriotic Americans who cherish democracy must never stop holding these anti-democratic hypocrites accountable for their brazen power grab. If we stop being eternally vigilant, it will only embolden them, and they will do it again. If they ever succeed, America’s torch of freedom will forever be extinguished. KARL KLINE
