• Allegheny County reports more than 1,000 new cases.
The Allegheny County Health Department reported 1,015 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing the county’s total to 45,699 since the pandemic began in March.
Saturday’s reporting included seven additional deaths from the disease, increasing the countywide death toll to 777. The deaths ranged from Dec. 11 to Dec. 18. Among them, the youngest victim was in his or her 40s and the oldest victims were in their 90s, the health department said.
Two of the fatalities were associated with long-term care facilities.
Pennsylvania’s reported COVID-19 cases grew by 9,834 on Saturday, making for a statewide total of 548,489 since March, according to the state Department of Health. There were 6,147 COVID-19 patients hospitalized Saturday in Pennsylvania, double the peak seen in the spring, the department said.
Statewide deaths reached 13,825, up 217 from Friday, according to the state. Of the total, 8,065 fatalities have involved residents of nursing or personal care facilities, the department said.
In Allegheny County, 670 of the most recently reported infections were confirmed cases from 2,403 new PCR tests, while 345 were probable. They represent a median age of 45 years. Fortysix of the positive tests were more than a week old; the rest were more recent, according to the county health department.
The county now has recorded 2,783 hospitalizations for COVID-19. As of Saturday, 814 people with the disease were hospitalized in the county, 214 of them in intensive care units, according to state data.
