Richard L. “Dick” Thornburgh was an anomaly in Western Pennsylvania politics: an influential Republican in a Democratic region.

As such, his contemporaries from both parties weighed in Thursday after his death.

Here’s what they are saying:

“Gov. Thornburgh was a man of great conviction and intellect but also possessed a kind and a gentle spirit. He was always there for me when I sought his wise counsel on the law and governing.” — Former Gov. Tom Corbett.

“His public service was a model of integrity and character that anyone seeking office would be wise to follow. A remarkable public servant and an even better man.” — Former Gov. Tom Ridge.

“His calm, grounded leadership was a hallmark of his governorship and was critical to guiding Pennsylvania through the tumultuous days following ... Three Mile Island.” — Gov. Tom Wolf.

“I was a 10-year-old kid when I had to evacuate my home during [the Three Mile Island] crisis. Gov. Thornburgh saw the commonwealth through that unsettling episode. Country over party,” Lt. Gov.John Fetterman.

“The steady nature in which he guided Pennsylvania through one of its most dangerous crises — the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island — should serve as an example for all elected officials.” — Sen. Pat Toomey,R-Pa.

“Our commonwealth and our country are better for his distinguished service.” — Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa.

“In a day when true bipartisanship is needed, Gov. Thornburgh’s example of working together, crossing aisles, and placing his efforts and passions [made] our world a better place.” — Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

“Dick Thornburgh stood in rare company as a leader, colleague and friend, and we are indisputably better off ... because of his incomparable integrity, ingenuity and dedication to serving others.” — University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Patrick Gallagher.

“Those of us who met and worked with Gov. Thornburgh knew and were influenced by a very kind and decent human being — perhaps his greatest legacy.” — Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Lawrence Tabas.

“Gov. Thornburgh was a shining example of public service and bipartisanship for the common good. ... Every Pennsylvanian truly had a friend in Dick Thornburgh.” — House Minority Leader Joanna McClinton.

“Dick had more careers in one lifetime than a roomful of people. U.S. Attorney, governor of the commonwealth, and attorney general of the United States are lifetime destinations, and Dick Thornburgh accomplished them all.” — Allegheny County Republican Committee chair Sam DeMarco.
