Students and parents debate the pros and cons of remote school, but most can agree that it’s a lot easier to focus on your laptop if you have a proper place to sit.

A dozen students in the Seneca Valley School District have new custom-made desks, thanks to two retired guys who wish to remain anonymous, the district shared last month.

Inspired by something they saw on TV, and having confirmed in October that there was a need with some students in the Butler County district, the men offered to make a dozen desks for students to have proper workspaces for virtual school work.

They did so using YouTube videos and took care to square every angle so the desks were completely level. They stained the white birch desks — made 24, 26 and 28 inches tall. Most of the desks were delivered to students in early December by Seneca Valley Academy of Choice Assistant Principal

Ashley Porter and Seneca Valley’s buildings and grounds department.

One lucky student who now has her own desk in her own room is Emily Kozar, a fourth grader at Evans City Elementary School. She lives in Callery with three siblings

— 18, 17 and 15 — who are all doing high school and votech in the district, which already was helping them out with a hot spot for their WiFi.The family has a variety of health concerns and other challenges, says their mom, Tammy, who is legally blind

and doesn’t drive. So she greatly appreciates the district’s support as she does her best to help with schooling at home while her husband, Steve,is at work.

“They’re always reaching out to me, checking on me,” says Mrs. Kozar. When the

district asked if Emily would like a desk, she said, “That would be nice.”

Emily had struggled with trying to be comfortable at the kitchen counter and other spots, but now she’s quite comfortable at her new desk and chair.

“It fits her perfectly,” says her mom, who wishes she could thank the men. “I just want them to know I’m grateful.”
