Norwin stings Penn-Trafford in critical Section 3 matchup

Fleming, Pryor lead Knights with double figures

It has been a tough few days for the Penn-Trafford basketball team.

Things started off badly on Friday with an upset loss to Hempfield in a critical Section 3 matchup. Then it got worse. Michael Fleming hit five 3pointers as part of his gamehigh 27 points and Kaleb Pryor chipped in 13 as Norwin (3-2, 1-2) stung rival Class 6A No. 4 Penn-Trafford (3-2, 1-2), 66-59, in another critical section matchup. Josh Kapcin had 18 for the Warriors in the loss.

• Elizabeth Forward (3-2, 3-1) wanted to show it was the team to beat in Section 3, but Class 4A No. 1 Belle Vernon had other ideas as Devin Whitlock had 21 points and seven rebounds while Daniel Gordon chipped in 19 as the Leopards rolled to a 59-47 win.

• Upper St. Clair (6-0) appeared headed for a fourth consecutiv­e nail-biter against Seneca Valley with the score tied, 52-52, after three quarters, but Dave Pantelis finished with a game-high 24 and helped the Class 6A top-ranked Panthers pull away for a 85-66 victory.

• Eddie Daniels led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points as Class 5A No. 4 Penn Hills (4-1, 3-0) put four players in double figures as the Indians rolled to a 54-37 win against Woodland Hills (0-4, 0-3) in the Wolverines first Section 3 game since the resignatio­n of head coach Matt Furjanic last week.

• South Allegheny (3-0, 20) got a scare in North Versailles before Antonio Epps hit a key layup late in the game for three of his 21, while his brother Bryce put up 20 as the Class 3A No, 1 Gladiators pulled out a 5047 Section 4 win against East Allegheny (0-3,0-3).

• Winchester Thurston had a 15-point lead with 4:30 remaining in regulation, but barely fended off a fierce Braddock Hills comeback that ended with a missed tying 3-pointer with less than 20 seconds remaining as the Bears (3-1, 3-1), behind 28 from Jackson Juzang pulled out a 69-65 Class 2A Section 3 win.

• Quaker Valley (3-1, 2-1) and Ambridge (0-1, 0-1) have staged some tremendous battles, but this wasn’t one of them as the Class 4A No. 4 Quakers, behind 16 each from Markus Frank and Ian Herring, rolled to an 86-49 victory.

Top girls games

• Eden Christian (2-3) got 17 points from Emilia Johnson and had Class 2A No. 3 Serra Catholic (3-0) on the ropes, but the Eagles got 17 from Nicole Pawlowski and 16 from Chloe Pordash to pull out a 51-50 win.

• West Mifflin (2-1, 2-0) pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season as the Titans handed Class 4A No. 2 Southmorel­and (4-2, 3-1) a 36-35 loss.

Star of the night

•Luke Kimmich hit four 3pointers and scored a gamehigh 27 points to help Franklin Regional (3-1, 3-0) pull out a 63-54 victory against Gateway (2-2, 2-2) in Class 5A Section 3.

Milestone

•Latrobe coach Brad Wetzel picked up his 250th career victory as the Wildcats (2-3, 2-2) took a 64-58 decision against host Kiski Area (1-4, 1-2) in Class 5A Section 3.
