Girls athlete of the week

// The Post-Gazette’s top female performer from the past seven days

- Paige Brown — By Steve Rotstein

The past week: Brown, a 5foot-8 senior guard, scored a career-high 41 points while hitting 10 3-pointers in the Leopards’ 80-47 win Saturday at Sharon.

Check this out: Believe it or not, this wasn’t the first 40point game of Brown’s career. She scored her previous career high of 40 points on nine 3-pointers as a sophomore in Lincoln Park’s 70-45 win against South Side Beaver on Dec. 18, 2018.

Did you ever imagine you would score 40 points in a game in high school, not once but twice? I actually wasn’t even expecting it. I didn’t even realize it until the end of the game.

What was cooler for you, scoring 40 points again or making 10 3-pointers? I don’t know. Probably scoring 40 again, because after I scored 40 the first time, everybody always expected me to score high, and I was like, ‘I don’t know if I can score that again,’ but it happened.

How did the feeling compare this time to the first time you scored 40? I feel like it can’t really compare, because once you do something the first time, nothing can really beat it. Also, my shot selection was a lot different. I’m pretty sure my first game I went 9 for 10 from 3, and this time I shot more and missed more. But I don’t think it really compares as much.

Did it put more pressure on you to be the team’s go-to scorer after you scored 40 the first time? Definitely, because after that everyone knew what I could do, so they fixed their defense so I couldn’t score that many.

What goals did you set for yourself before your senior year, if any? I definitely have the goal of scoring 1,000 points, but overall, it’s more of just being a leader and pushing my team to be better, and of course, to make playoffs. With every team qualifying for the WPIAL postseason this year, do you think it will still feel special for you to be part of the first Lincoln Park girls team to play in a playoff game? I think it’s still going to be very special, considering that in girls L.P. history, nobody has made it. So regardless, we still get to make the playoffs for the first time. What’s your favorite subject in school? I probably would go with any of my health-science classes, which is like medical terminology.

Have you thought about what field you want to study in college? I’m going to major in criminology and minor in psychology, so I’m going into forensics. Like a forensic profiler.
