Pitt women lose

Syracuse uses big fourth quarter to pull away from Pitt.

The Syracuse women outscored visiting Pitt, 27-12, in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Panthers in an 80-57 win Thursday night.

The Orange (8-3, 5-3 ACC) shot 12 of 29 from 3-point range, while the Panthers (45, 2-4) were just 3 of 17.

Sophomore guard Dayshanett­e Harris led Pitt with 14 points and 4 assists. Five players scored in double figures for Syracuse.

Penn State

Makenna Marisa, a Peters Township graduate, scored 24 points to help lead the Nittany Lions (5-7, 2-6 Big Ten) to an 80-76 win against host Illinois (2-9, 0-8). Penn State trailed by one with 2:03 remaining in the game but got 6 points from Shay Hagan and a big 3-pointer from Maddie Burke to pull ahead. Johnasia Cash, a McKeesport graduate, added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

N.C. State

Leading scorer Devon Daniels is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The 6-foot-5 senior suffered the injury Wednesday in a victory over Wake Forest. Daniels was averaging 16.5 points and 5.1 rebounds.

Army

Women’s coach Dave Magarity, who took over when Maggie Dixon died of arrhythmia, will retire at the end of the season, a source told The Associated Press. Magarity, 71, has coached more 1,000 games in his 40-plus years in men’s and women’s basketball.

Connecticu­t

The No. 3 Connecticu­t women (10-1) lost for the first time as Chelsea Dungee scored 37 points to lead host No. 19 Arkansas (12-6). The Razorbacks also beat thenNo. 4 Baylor Dec. 4.

Virginia Tech

Aisha Sheppard scored 18 of her 28 points in overtime to help the Virginia Tech women (8-7, 3-7 ACC) upset No. 2 North Carolina State, 83-71, in Blacksburg, Va. N.C. State (11-1, 6-1) was without All-American Elissa Cunane because of COVID19 protocols.
