Snow in the Pittsburgh forecast
The National Weather Service on Friday warned that freezing rain and snow are likely headed to the Pittsburgh region this weekend.
Shannon Hefferan, a meteorologist for the service, said to expect at least a few inches of snow.
“Due to a low pressure system coming in from the west, we’re expecting snow totals on Sunday night to early Monday to be about 2 to 4 inches,” Ms. Hefferan said. “It will mainly be snow, although there could be areas south of the city that get freezing rain instead.”
Ms. Hefferan said the heaviest snowfall will happen Sunday evening, but the snow could continue through Monday and into Tuesday. She also said the weather will probably not reach the threshold to issue a winter storm warning, but the weather service may issue a winter weather advisory overnight as more model data comes in.
Ms. Hefferan said Friday night would be the coldest with temperatures dropping into the teens.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation advised motorists on Friday to avoid all unnecessary travel during the storm, particularly in Central Pennsylvania.
PennDOT officials said they anticipate the implementation of travel restrictions on trucks and other vehicles on certain roads around the state until conditions improve.
Officials said high winds and freezing temperatures are expected during the storm, so motorists should be aware of blowing and drifting snow, which can cause icy areas on roadways, including overpasses and bridges.
