Trojanette­s win to stake claim on 3A

Recapping all the high school basketball action from a snowy Monday.

North Catholic removed any doubt as to which team is the best in Class 3A at the moment.

The Trojanette­s, who were ranked No. 2 in the latest rankings, pulled away from No. 3 Laurel down the stretch Monday night and picked up a 55-30 victory. North Catholic beat the top-ranked squad, Mohawk, on Thursday.

North Catholic (10-1, 6-0) has won nine in a row. Against Laurel, the Trojanette­s broke open the game late by outscoring the Spartans 33-16 in the second half and 20-11 in the fourth quarter. Tara Lucot led the charge with a game-high 18 points.

Regan Atkins posted 11 points for Laurel (9-2, 4-2).

escape with a 49-47 victory. The Panthers (6-1, 2-0) went 8 for 10 from the line through the first three quarters, then made just 5 of 20 in the fourth. Bethel Park, meanwhile, used that to their advantage and outscored Upper St. Clair 16-5 in the final quarter. Kate Robbins scored 13 points for Upper St. Clair and Paige Dellicarri added 12. Duquesne recruit Olivia Westphal had 22 for the Black Hawks (6-2, 1-1).

• Blackhawk, ranked third in 4A, saw four players reach double figures in its 75-30 Section 2 rout of Central Valley (1-8, 1-6). The Cougars (73, 5-2) got 12 points each from Kassie Potts, Alena Fusetti and Jolie Strati while Casey Nixon contribute­d 10 points.

• Alexa Washington scored 18 points and passed out four assists to lead Oakland Catholic past Moon, 64-49, in 5A Section 1. The Eagles (55, 2-1) snapped a four-game losing skid. The Tigers (3-7, 22) got a game-high 25 points from Emma Theodorsso­n.

Top boys games

• Carter Huggins of Freedom (0-6, 0-3) outdueled JoJo Reynolds of New Brighton (35, 1-3), but Reynolds’ won the game, 66-63. Huggins posted 25 points while Reynolds pumped in 21 in the 3A Section 2 contest.

• Ed Daniels had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals to guide 5A No. 3 Penn Hills (5-3) past 4A No. 5 North Catholic (9-3) for a 68-64 non-section victory. The Trojans’ Andrew Ammerman had 23 points and 18 rebounds.

Stars of the night

• Corynne Hauser knocked down four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 29 points for 1A No. 1 Rochester (6-3, 5-0) in its 78-60 Section 1 victory against Eden Christian Academy (5-4, 2-1).

• Paige Julian poured in 32 points to lift 3A No. 1 Mohawk to a 75-47 triumph against Freedom in a Section 1 matchup. Julian had 12 points in the third quarter and went 7-for-7 from the freethrow line for the game.
