Everett’s strong play not enough to overtake BC
Panthers bounced by Boston College in ACC tournament opener.
The Pitt women ( 5- 14) saw their 2020-21 season come to an end in the first round of the ACC tournament Wednesday as they fell to Boston College, 67-56, in Greensboro N.C.
“I think it was overall a year of growth,” head coach Lance White said. “I think we’re a much better basketball team than we were a year ago. But at the same time we still have a long ways to go. Again, we’ll get back to work and really we’ve got to develop a mentality. I think we used this year so much as a year to compete for respect.”
Jayla Everett had a big game in the loss for Pitt as she scored 22 points and had three rebounds, three assists and two steals while going 7 for 15 from the floor and 3 for 8 from deep.
It marked Everett’s second consecutive 20- plus point outing as she closed out her first season as a Panther with seven games of 20 or more points.
Amber Brown finished off her strong game with a season-high 15 points and a team- high nine rebounds while going 4 for 9 from the floor and 7 for 8 from the free-throw line.
As a team, Pitt shot
33.3% from the floor while defensively they held the Eagles to just 32.8% shooting in the loss.
Pitt held the 41-40 edge in rebounds while Boston College turned 22 Pitt turnovers into 23 points, which proved to be the deciding factor in the game.
The Eagles (7-11) were led offensively by Taylor Swartz who scored a careerhigh 33 points while connecting on 15 for 16 from the free throw line.
Other women’s game
West Virginia 72, Kansas State 64: Esmery Martinez led the No. 20 Mountaineers (19-4, 13-4 Big 12) with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Kysre Gondrezick added 14
and Kirsten Deans scored 13 with nine rebounds as West Virginia defeated host Kansas State (8-16, 3-14).
Men’s game
Penn State 84, Minnesota 65: Seniors Trent Buttrick, John Harrar and Jamari Wheeler combined for 41.6 percent of the Nittany Lions’ scoring in Penn State’s victory against visiting Minnesota (13-13, 6-13) The Nittany Lions (9-13, 6-12) honored their five senior student-athletes prior to the Big Ten win. Myreon Jones led the Nittany Lions in scoring, finishing with 17 points including a key 3-pointer as the Gophers tried to claw back into the game in the final minutes.
