When and where will Pitt students graduate?
The University of Pittsburgh has told undergraduate seniors on its main Oakland campus that the class of 2021 will share a mix of in-person and remote commencement events between April 30 and May 24, with guest limits.
“A maximum of two guests per graduate will be permitted to attend these in-person events. In order to properly maintain physical distance between graduates, guests, faculty and staff, several ceremonies will be hosted over multiple days,” stated a note to campus Friday. “All ceremonies will be streamed online to encourage families and friends to watch and celebrate virtually.”
Officials added that some schools have decided to hold virtual ceremonies given feedback
from graduate and professional students.
Normally, the main commencement is held in the 12,500-seat Petersen Events Center. This year’s tentative list of ceremonies does not provide locations. Last spring, COVID19 forced ceremonies online.
Pitt’s main campus, with about 29,000 students, is typically the first or near first among the region’s commencements.
Branches in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville also hold ceremonies.
“Anyone attending inperson ceremonies will be required to wear a face covering throughout the event,” Pitt’s announcement read. “With the proper health and safety protocols in place, including face coverings, physical distancing and good hand hygiene, the COVID19 Medical Response Office is confident that in person ceremonies present minimal risk.”
As has become the norm during the pandemic, officials said final plans are subject to virus trends. The note encouraged families to be flexible. “Please consider the possibility of cancellations or changes when planning travel. Location details are being finalized,” it read.
