Regulate methane from oil and gas wells
Methane is over 80 times more potent than carbon in the first 20 years after it is released into the atmosphere. That’s why we’re adding our voices as newly elected legislators to support the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s proposed regulations to reduce this as well as volatile organic compound emissions from existing oil and gas operations. This is the quickest and most cost-effective way to avert the worst impacts of climate change and meet the governor’s goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
But to be able to tell our constituents we’ve done all that we can through this regulation, we’re urging that the final version of the rule include controls for low-producing wells. Lowproducing wells are responsible for more than half the methane pollution from oil and gas sources in the state. In Pennsylvania, about 60% of the oil and gas produced from these wells is extracted by just 10 companies that earned from $5 million to $ 47.9 million last year. Between the wells’ contribution to the problem and companies’ ability to afford improved inspection and repairs, we can’t leave this source of methane emissions unaddressed.
Actively tackling climate change was a part of our platforms. We look forward to using this as an initial opportunity to transition that pledge into action. REP. EMILY KINKEAD
