Rochester rolls past Kennedy in 1A

Chartiers Valley outlasts Warren

-

Rochester doesn’t usually keep teams in its own classification hanging around after halftime.

That’s what happens when you have won your three WPIAL playoff games by an average of 41.3 points and put the mercy rule into effect every time.

Kennedy Catholic was a bit more of a challenge, but in the end the Rams were too much for the District 10 champions as Corynne Hauser scored a game-high 19 and Alexis Robison contributed 17 as Rochester (16-3) rolled to a 61-48 win against the Eagles.

“For us, we welcome that challenge and had a little of that experience in some out non-conference games against some of the bigger schools keeping the games close against us,” Rochester coach C.J. Iannini said. “We’ve been in those scenarios, but it’s great to be challenged as a team because it puts everything in perspective, it keeps you humble, it keeps you hungry and we were just very happy to come out with a win against a really good Kennedy Catholic team.”

Robison scored 13 in the first half while the Eagles concentrated on stopping Hauser, but when they moved over to her after the intermission, Hauser burned them for 17 points.

“It’s a double-edged sword and you’ve got to pick your poison,” Iannini said. “But what I was happy with was the contributions from other players. Kallista Seybert got us eight, [Alysha] Martin got us eight ... so some other players stepped up when we needed them to.”

Class 5A

Chartiers Valley 61, Warren 38: Tim McConnell wasn’t happy with the way Chartiers Valley came out of the gate against District 10 champion Warren.

“In all honesty we wanted to speed the game up, so we pressed them a little bit and we didn’t press real well and we weren’t rotating,” McConnell said. “In the second half, we just went to straight man play and made it tough for them to score.”

It was extremely effective as the Colts (24-3) held the Dragons (17-7) to only 13 second-half points while Perri Page came through with a 19 points and 14 rebounds as Chartiers Valley made it back to the state semifinals.
