SPRING REPORT

ORIOLES 11 PIRATES 9

- — Jason Mackey

The crazy stuff came out at night.

Playing their first — and only — home night game of spring training at LECOM Park on Friday, the Pirates and the Orioles slogged through one of the sloppier games you’ll see as Baltimore left Bradenton with an 11-9 victory.

The teams combined for nine errors, while Pirates pitchers coughed up three home runs — one more than they had 1-2-3 innings. The Pirates and Orioles had 21 total hits and took advantage of three combined wild pitches in a contest that did not lack for teachable moments.

The loss dropped the Pirates to 8-9-1 this spring, including 5-4 at home.

On the mound

The biggest takeaway here is a possible injury to lefthanded starter Steven Brault, who was pulled after just two innings and 33 pitches.

After Brault exited, the Pirates announced he was being evaluated for left arm (latissimus muscle) tightness and was considered day-to-day. Obviously issues to a pitcher’s throwing arm or shoulder are never ideal, and Brault has dealt with that each of the past two seasons. The Pirates will certainly hope the results come back favorable.

David Bednar built on his story-of-camp status with a 1-2-3 ninth, the local product now having tossed seven scoreless innings while allowing a pair of singles and striking out 13.

At the plate

While the Pirates received plenty of assistance from the Orioles, they also had a couple players stay hot, with the group continuing to produce better-than-anticipated offense.

Ke’Bryan Hayes had a pair of doubles and now has eight extra-base hits this spring, tied for the most in the majors. Hayes also has a teamhigh 24 total bases. Only 10 MLB hitters have more.

Todd Frazier ripped a 1-0 fastball to left in the third inning for his third homer of spring, a two-run shot.

Adam Frazier’s fourthinning single helped him improve to 13-for-22 (.591) in his first seven games.
