Steelers add a pair not drafted in 2020

The Steelers are trying to build a pro day all-star team — composed of players who aren’t eligible for this year’s NFL draft.

Linebacker Jarvis Miller and wide receiver Matthew Sexton signed with the Steelers to join their offseason roster, the team announced Wednesday. Like Georgia product Tyler Simmons, who signed last week, Miller and Sexton worked out at recent college pro days after going undrafted in 2020.

Miller, 6 feet 2, 225 pounds, played his 2019 senior season at Massachusetts after transferring from Penn State. He was an under-the-radar high school recruit who had just 23 tackles in 33 games with the Nittany Lions, but he finished strong with 60 tackles as a starting middle linebacker for the Minutemen.

Sexton is a 5-11, 175pound Eastern Michigan alumnus who worked out at Michigan State’s pro day last week. He reportedly ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.3-second range, sure to catch the eyes of some teams looking to take a flyer on a flyer. Sexton used his speed to make plays in the Mid-American Conference, catching 34 passes for 508 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games as a senior.

Those are modest receiving numbers, but Sexton was a special teams ace who blocked three kicks in college. He also stood out as a returner for the Aviators in The Spring League, which ironically played last fall in an effort to showcase players who didn’t make NFL rosters or practice squads. Sexton returned a punt and kick for scores in The Spring League last year.
