New burnt flavored marshmallows by Jet-Puffed won’t burn mouth

- By Gretchen McKay

It’s been a topic of debate among marshmallow lovers since the first official recipe for a s’more came out in the 1927 Girl Scout guidebook: When toasting the spongy confection over an open fire for s’mores, how crispy and gooey should they be?

Some like their marshmallows only lightly toasted so as to not burn their tongues when they’re sandwiched with chocolate between two graham crackers. Others prefer the firebomb approach, sticking the pillowy puffs of sugar and gelatin so far into the hot coals that they actually catch fire, turn black and have to be blown out.

Or, maybe you like it either way but just aren’t patient enough to stand over a campfire with a stick.

Jet-Puffed, which introduced marshmallows to the

public in 1958 as a product of Kraft foods, offers the sugary treats today in different sizes, flavors, colors and as a spreadable cream. It wants to take the guesswork out of the debate. Or at the very least, do away with the fire element of s’mores making, along with the fear of being impaled by a very hot and sharp stick.

On Thursday, the marshmallow giant will debut a new product that promises

to “do the roasting and toasting for you,” according to a press release, and “bring that delicious, crispy flavor to the tip of your tongue without burning your mouth.”

Jet-Puffed Burnt marshmallows will be sold online.

Is this shortcut method an April Fool’s Day joke, or an answer to a s’mores lover’s prayers? We’ll have to wait and see.
