Man charged with murder in Calif. spree
A man was charged Friday with murder and attempted murder in a shooting rampage at a Southern California office building this week that left four people dead, including a 9-yearold boy whose mother was critically wounded.
Policehave not revealed a motivefor Wednesday’s attack,but they said the gunmanhad targeted the business,Unified Homes, and had personaland business relationshipswith the victims.
The suspect, Aminadab Gaxiola Gonzalez, is married to a longtime employee of the company, Aleyda Mendoza. It’s not known where she was at the time of the shooting.
Ms. Mendoza confirmed to The Associated Press she is Mr. Gaxiola’s wife. She said she would provide a statement but did not immediately send one. According to her LinkedIn account, she has been a broker assistant at Unified Homes since 2011.
Mr. Gaxiola, 44, was charged with four murder counts and three attempted murder counts for firing at two officers who were not hit and for critically wounding the slain boy’s mother, authorities said.
Mr. Gaxiola was shot and remained in a hospital in critical but stable condition Friday. Authorities are investigating whether he was wounded by police or self-inflicted gunfire.
7 Texas cops fired after death of Black inmate
Seven officers involved in the in-custody death of a Black jail inmate in Texas whose family members say may have been suffering a mental health crisis have been fired, a sheriff said.
The detention officers violated sheriff’s office policies and procedures leading up to the death of Marvin Scott III, Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner said in a news release Thursday. An eighth officer resigned. The names and races of the officers haven’t been released.
Mr.Scott, 26, was arrested March14 at an outlet mall in Allen,Texas, on a charge of possessingless than 2 ounces ofmarijuana, authorities said.Officers took Mr. Scott toa hospital because he was reportedly acting erratically. Hewas released, and police tookhim to the county jail.
Whileat the jail, Mr. Scott beganto exhibit “some strangebehavior,” Sheriff Skinnersaid on March 19. Detentionofficers placed Mr. Scotton a restraint bed, pepper-sprayedhim and covered hisface with a spit mask. Mr. Scottbecame unresponsive andwas later pronounced deadat a hospital.
TheCollin County medical examiner’soffice has not yet releasedMr. Scott’s cause of death,and the Texas Rangers arecontinuing to investigate hisdeath, according to Sheriff Skinner’s statement.

April the giraffe, who lived at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y., was euthanized because she had worsening arthritis, the park announced Friday.
