Beaver follows A-List for two-hit shutout

-

It didn’t take Beaver’s Payton List very long to make the transition from basketball to softball.

Central Valley found out the hard way. List, a Virginia Tech recruit, threw a twohit shutout and struck out 15 to lead the Class 4A No. 2-ranked Bobcats (3-2, 2-0) to an 8-0 victory against the Warriors (2-3, 2-1) in a Section 3 battle.

She didn’t only do it with her arm. List also went 3 for 3 with two homers and five RBIs. List has not allowed a run in three outings this season.

No one knew much about Ligonier Valley coming into its first season back in the WPIAL after decades in District 6, but they’re finding out the Rams have a pretty good program. Class 2A No. 5 Seton LaSalle found that out the hard way as Maddie Griffin struck out 14 to help No. 2 Ligonier Valley (2-0, 1-0) to a 4-0 win against the Rebels (1-2, 0-1) in their Section 2 opener.

• Mia Edwards struck out 15 and walked three as she hurled a no-hitter at Riverside to lead Shenango (6-1, 2-0) to a 7-0 victory against Class 2A rival Panthers (1-2, 1-2).

• Emma Searick fell a double short of the cycle as she went 3 for 3 with a homer, triple and two RBIs to support pitcher Julia Hetrick, who struck out five in a one-hitter to help Armstrong (5-1, 3-0) to a 12-1 Class 5A Section 1 win against Kiski Area (0-4, 0-2)

• Brookelle Holby went 2 for 4 with three

RBIs to help her own cause as she threw a three-hitter and fanned 10 while Maleah Pacella had two hits and drove in three as Baldwin (1-2, 1-0) picked up the win. The Class 6A No. 5 Highlanders defeated Peters Township (1-4, 0-1), 9-2, in Section 1

action.

• It doesn’t happen very often, but Kenzie Gillis hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to account for the only runs of the game as Pine-Richland (2-2, 1-0) pulled off a 2-0 shutout of Class 6A No. 1

Hempfield (3-2, 0-1). The Spartans had not been shut out since a 1-0 loss to Latrobe on May 3, 2018.

• Angie Costa struck out nine and allowed only one run on a first-inning doublesteal, but that run was enough as she was outdueled by Chartiers Valley starter Jenna Boneysteele, who fanned 10 and walked one to lead the Colts (3-3, 2-0) to a 1-0 upset of Section 4 rival and Class 5A No. 3 West Allegheny (3-2, 1-1).

• North Allegheny had dropped its past four, but the Tigers put it together against rival Seneca Valley. Alaina Whipkey went 3 for 3 with a homer and drove in three as the Tigers (2-4, 1-0) pulled out a 6-2 victory against the previously undefeated Raiders (4-1, 0-1) in their Class 6A Section 2 opener.
