No. 1 West Allegheny gives South Fayette its first loss

-

Auburn recruit Gavin Miller missed the first week of the season for West Allegheny while recovering from a preseason wrist injury, but the talented junior appears to be back in midseason form for the Indians.

Miller struck out 11 in 6⅓ innings to help lead Class 5A No. 1 West Allegheny (4-1, 30) to a pivotal section win against South Fayette (6-1, 21), 7-3.

Nathan Nolan had three hits and drove in three runs for the Indians, while A.J. Bryan and Chase Krewson tallied three hits apiece for the Lions. West Allegheny built an 3-0 lead, then used a four-run fifth to blow the game open and hand South Fayette its first defeat.

“No question, it was a big game,” said Indians coach Bryan Cornell.

“You definitely don’t want to fall behind [in the standings], and we came out on top today.”
