Croneworth hits for cycle; Padres plate 24

San Diego second baseman Jake Cronenwort­h hit for the cycle for the first time in his major league career Friday night as the visiting Padres blew out the Washington Nationals, 24-8.

After lining out in the first inning, Cronenwort­h had a two-run double in the second, an RBI triple in the third, a solo homer in the fifth and an infield single against the shift in the sixth.

Cronenwort­h’s cycle was the third in Padres’ history, following Matt Kemp (2015) and Wil Myers (2017).

Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies is the only other player to hit for the cycle against the Nationals (2005presen­t), accomplish­ing the feat on the final day of the 2018 season.

The 27-year-old Cronenwort­h is batting .276 with 12 home runs and 34 RBIs.

Brewers 11, Reds 6: Willie Adames homered and drove in four runs as visiting Milwaukee rallied to beat host Cincinnati. Adames had a tworun shot in the fifth inning and then doubled home two more in a five-run eighth that buried the Reds. After losing three in a row to the Reds in Milwaukee before the All-Star break, the Brewers won the first of a three-game set in Cincinnati and pushed their lead in the NL Central back to five games. With the Reds leading 5-3 in the sixth, Luis Urías hit an RBI double against Tyler Mahle. Reliever Amir Garrett (0-3) came in and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a bouncing ball deep into the shift that second baseman Jonathan India misplayed, allowing Urías to race home with the tying run.

Rays 7, Braves 6: Austin Meadows hit a single in the 10th-inning to score Brett Phillips from second base with the tiebreakin­g run, and visiting Tampa Bay beat Atlanta. With Phillips opening the 10th on second base, right-hander Jesse Chavez (0-2) walked Brandon Lowe before recording two outs. Chavez then gave up Meadows’ go-ahead single to right field.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 0: Eduardo Rodriguez shut down the short-handed Yankees into the sixth inning and Christian Arroyo and J.D. Martinez homered as visiting Boston beat their rivals with New York. Tanner Houck pitched the final three innings, closing out Boston’s three-hitter for his first save. Martinez connected against Justin Wilson for his 19th of the season.

Blue Jays 10, Rangers 2: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed up his breakout All-Star Game with two homers as Toronto powered past visiting Texas. All-Stars Teoscar Hernandez and Marcus Semien homered for Toronto along with Randal Grichuk. Guerrero, named the

All-Star Game Most Valuable Player on Tuesday night, connected off Texas starter Jordan Lyles in the first inning to make it 1-0 and added a three-run blast in the sixth against Dennis Santana, his 30th of the season.

Royals 9, Orioles 2: Leadoff man Whit Merrifield went 4 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs to lead Kansas City past host Baltimore. Shortstop Nicky Lopes went 2 for 4 with four RBIs in the win.

Astros 7, White Sox 1: Lance McCullers Jr. pitched seven sparkling innings, and visiting Houston beat Chicago in the opener of a weekend series between AL division leaders.

The rains were never going to relent in Detroit, so the Twins and Tigers will try again to play two on Saturday. The teams will try to play two seven-inning games Saturday at 1:10 p.m. and 6:10 p.m.
