Was the situation handled legally?
Regarding the recent editorial (July 12 “Modern General”), it is never good for this country to put itself in a situation where the military has to let the civilian leaders know that their chosen methods of handling a situation are not legal.
One can only imagine the extreme pressure that Gen. Mark Milley was feeling at that time. You had a president who spent four years acting the part of a king instead of president; Cabinet members, including Attorney General William Barr, were in fear of telling the king he was wearing no clothes. Finally, at the insistence of Gen. Milley, AG Barr spoke up and told Trump it was against the law to use federal troops against the civilian population.
The last time that was done was by Gen. Douglas MacArthur who ran the World War I “Bonus March” veterans out of Washington, D.C., in 1932, prompting a law prohibiting that very act. Trump wouldn’t know that, but Gen. Milley did.
Let’s not forget that the Republican members of Congress aided this by not seeing, hearing and speaking evil of King Trump. Some members of our Pennsylvania congressional delegation were the biggest supporters of the insurrectionist President Trump, including Rep. Mike Kelly of Butler, who wanted to void 2 million Pennsylvania mail-in votes. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler of Washington County claims to have prosecuted terrorists in Iraq while in the Navy.
One can only believe that he never had a single successful prosecution in that capacity because he saw no terrorists on Jan. 6.
I have to say that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has more guts than the entire Republican Party.
