- — John Hayes

Lake Erie (Erie County) When the weather cooperated, anglers reported that walleye, most of legal size, were suspended at 40-50 feet in 50-70 feet of water off Erie County shores. Many throwbacks were found near the bottom in shallower water. Markers were stacked northeast of Walnut. Worm harnesses with silver blades were hot. Night anglers reported hookups when trolling crankbaits.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County) With summer pool level dropping, slab yellow perch were taken in weed beds and legal walleye were boated at night. Before the storm, a few muskies were caught north of the Causeway.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County) The 2021 Bass Classic, a fundraiser for the United Way of Western Crawford County, was won Friday with an eight-fish weight of 20.9 pounds. Thirty two-angler teams weighed in 13 smallmouth and 98 largemouth bass.

Justus Lake (Venango County) Largemouths on the small side took soft plastics and spinnerbaits.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County) When rain cooled the water, keeper crappies were suspended at 10-15 feet near dropoffs and were shallower at brush piles. Anglers reported catches of hybrid white bass, largemouth bass and catfish.

Lake Arthur (Butler

County) Crappies took soft plastics and jigs tipped with live minnows from dusk through morning. Muskie anglers reported catches when trolling jointed crankbaits and diving plugs.

Allegheny River (Allegheny County) Rain washed debris into the river, causing submerged hazards for boaters. Crawlers were the bait du jour Wednesday during Venture Outdoors’ TriAnglers fishing program. Tommy Lippert of the North Side used worms to catch an 18-inch flathead catfish and two rock bass. Other anglers rigged with crawlers brought a smallmouth and bluegill onto the North Shore wharf under the Clemente Bridge.

Yellow Creek Lake (Armstrong County) Luke Corace, 8, of Worthington caught a 20-inch largemouth bass on the 720-acre state park lake.

Cross Creek Lake (Washington County) While fishing a wax worm in the shallows, Rico Anthony of Pittsburgh boated a 30-inch, 24-pound flathead catfish.

Youghiogheny River (Fayette, Somerset counties) Big rainbow trout took streamers above Ohiopyle.
