Brady irritated by NFL values

Tells Players Association to wake up

- From local and wire dispatches

Tom Brady said he has found his voice in Tampa Bay, and it’s not restricted to the huddle.

The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback on Thursday used his exceptionally large social media platform to tell players to “wake up” after Forbes listed the franchise values for all 32 NFL teams.

Thanks to an enormous new TV contract, franchise values increased 14% on average.

The point of irritation for Brady — and you would think the NFL Players Association ― is that players agreed to a 20% reduction in the salary cap due to lost revenues resulting from the pandemic.

The Tennessee Titans haven’t needed their backup quarterback since Ryan Tannehill took over as the starter in 2019, though competition for that job took another twist. The team signed free-agent Matt Barkley and released DeShone Kizer.

• Three of the four Miami Dolphins players who had been on the COVID-19 reserve list were removed from it Thursday. Coming off the list were tight ends Cethan Carter and Adam Shaheen and receiver Preston Williams. Tight end Mike Gesicki remained on the list.

• NFL officiating chief Al Riveron, a Cuban who became the league’s first Hispanic referee, retired. Riveron worked as an onfield official for nine years and became a member of the NFL’s officiating staff in 2013 as a senior director.

Baseball

The visiting Wild Things, for a second night, got the scoring started with a tworun inning. Joe Campagna’s 10th home run of the season brought in two in the 8-2 victory over the Sussex County Miners at Skylands Stadium. Washington would add a run in the third on an RBI single by Bralin Jackson that plated Nick Ward.

NCAA champion Rachel Heck of Stanford rallied to beat Arkansas’ Brooke Matthews in 19 holes in Harrison, N.Y., to advance to the U.S. Women’s Amateur quarterfinals. Heck, from Memphis, Tenn., overcame a two-hole deficit with two to play at Westchester Country Club.

• Scotland’s Calum Hill took full advantage of favorable conditions in St. Andrews, Scotland, to shoot a 9under 63. and take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Hero Open.
