Highlights from Day 16

Men’s basketball: Kevin Durant scored 29 points and joined Carmelo Anthony as the only three-time men’s gold medalists in Olympic history as the U.S. team held off France, 87-82, to win the gold medal for the 16th time in 19 tries. Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday each had 11.

Women’s basketball: Gabby Williams led seven players in double figures with 17 points, and France beat Serbia, 91-76, for the bronze medal.

Men’s boxing: Galal Yafai won Britain’s first boxing gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, beating Carlo Paalam of the Philippine­s 4:1 in the flyweight final. Brazil’s Hebert Sousa won the middleweig­ht gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in shocking fashion when his bout with Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak was stopped by a third-round knockdown.

Women’s boxing: Stoyka Krasteva of Bulgaria capped her impressive run through the Tokyo Olympics with the flyweight gold medal. She beat top-seeded Buse Naz Cakiroglu of Turkey, 5:0. Huang Hsiao-wen of Taiwan, the 2019 world champion, and Tsukimi Namiki of Japan won bronze in the lightest women’s weight class. Busenaz Sürmeneli of Turkey won the women’s welterweig­ht gold medal. She persevered through a difficult final against China’s Gu Hong to win Turkey’s first-ever boxing gold. Oshae Jones of the United States and Lovlina Borgohain of India won bronze.

Canoe sprint: Ronald Rauhe became the first man to win a medal in canoe sprint in five Olympics when Germany won the men’s kayak four 500 meters in the final race at the Sea Forest Waterway. Lisa Carrington of New Zealand had already won three gold medals but missed out on a fourth when the Kiwis finished fourth in the women’s kayak four 500. Hungary won the race. Serghei Tarnovschi of Moldova returned to the Olympics to win a bronze medal in the men’s canoe 1,000 after being stripped of his 2016 bronze medal for a positive doping test.

Cycling: The Danish team of Lasse Norman Hansen and Michael Morkov won the return of the men’s Madison to the track cycling program at the Olympics, helping to atone for a disappoint­ing silver medal in the team pursuit.

Women’s golf: Nelly Korda gave the Americans a sweep of gold medals in golf, holding on for a one-shot victory in a thrill-a-minute finish to the Olympic women’s golf competitio­n.

Men’s handball: France won the gold medal, beating Denmark, 25-23, in the final, gaining a measure of revenge for defeat to the Danes in the gold-medal game in 2016. Spain beat Egypt, 33-31, for the bronze medal.

Men’s marathon: Eliud Kipchoge pulled away late and no one could come close to catching him as the 36-yearold from Kenya defended his Olympic marathon title. Kipchoge finished in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 38 seconds. It was more than 80 seconds ahead of runner-up Abdi Nageeye of the Netherland­s. Bashir Abdi of Belgium earned bronze to close out the track and field portion of the Tokyo Games.

Women’s water polo: Ashleigh Johnson made 11 saves, Maddie Mussleman scored three times and the United States routed Spain, 14-5, in the final. The U.S. won its third consecutiv­e gold medal. The U.S. women join the men’s teams from Britain (1908-1920) and Hungary (2000-2008) as the only countries to win at least three consecutiv­e water polo titles.

Men’s soccer: Malcolm scored the winner at 108 in extra time, giving Brazil a 2-1 win in the gold-medal game over Spain.

Men’s beach volleyball: Anders Mol and Christian Sorum of Norway beat the reigning world champions from the ROC Viacheslav Krasilniko­v and Oleg Stoyanovsk­iy, 21-17, 21-18, for the gold. Qatar beat Latvia for the bronze.
