Phillies lose slugger Hoskins to groin strain

-

The first-place Philadelphia Phillies placed first baseman Rhys Hoskins on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left groin strain.

Hoskins, who leads the Phillies with 24 home runs and 68 RBIs this season, has missed the surging Phillies’ past three games with the injury.

The Phillies have won eight games in a row, including a weekend sweep of the New York Mets, to take over first place in the National League East.

Brad Miller started at first in Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers at Citizens Bank Park.

Rays

Tampa Bay placed lefthanded pitcher Ryan Yarbrough on the COVID-19 injured list. Manager Kevin Cash said Yarbrough, who was with the Rays over the weekend during a threegame sweep at Baltimore, did not join the club in Boston for a three-game series at Fenway Park.

Dodgers

Los Angeles star outfielder Mookie Betts was a late scratch from the lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies because of a sore right hip that could send him to the injured list. Manager Dave Roberts said before an IL stint “is very probable” for Betts. Betts is batting .277 with 17 home runs and 44 RBIs in 87 games for the defending World Series champions.

Marlins

Manager Don Mattingly, sidelined since he tested positive for COVID-19 on July 31, is expected to rejoin the team Friday. Mattingly, 60, who was vaccinated in mid- April, experienced mild symptoms. The lastplace Marlins began a series Monday against the Padres in San Diego, and Mattingly plans to return to the dugout when they start a homestand against the Chicago Cubs.
