Double Dutch

Sheraden Colonial with tasty location on the market for $125,000

When you talk with Brandon Bonwell about his home in Sheraden, the one word that keeps coming up is “close” — close to Downtown, close to shopping and close to his favorite coffee shop.

“Great proximity to good food and the best coffee in Pittsburgh down in the Rocks, Black Forge Coffee House II,” he said.

But he didn’t know that when he bought the two-story Dutch Colonial with three bedrooms and one full bathroom. “I bought it because it was in great condition and close to where my future wife worked [in Oakland].”

Now that they’re married and have a place of their own, Bonwell has put 1401 Jeffers St. on the market for $125,000 (MLS No. 1514729) with Matthew Vogel of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Services (412-525-0112 or coldwellbankerhomes.com). The property is under contract.

The first thing you notice when you walk in the front door is the original hardwood floors that run throughout the house. They are stained a rich, warm brown, contrasting with the white trim and crown molding. Many of the rooms have been freshly painted and the floors were refinished about three years ago.

“The place has fantastic light,” Bonwell said. “There are four high windows in the dining room but because they’re way up there are no privacy issues.”

There is a picture window in the living room and another in the dining room looking out to the rear deck. The living and dining rooms

are connected by a large archway that gives the first floor an open feel.

The kitchen, which was updated a few years ago, has white Shaker-style cabinets and a glass mosaic tile backsplash with threads of black, gray and white.

For the counter tops, Bonwell chose Ubatuba granite, a finely textured black stone with gray and green specks. The stainless-steel appliances include a Whirlpool refrigerator with bottom freezer and Amana dishwasher, gas range and microwave range hood combo.

A door in the kitchen leads to the deck and fencedin yard. Next to the yard is a detached double garage with an automatic garage door opener. The other door in the kitchen leads to the unfinished basement, which has newly painted white walls and hookups for a washer and dryer.

Bonwell noted that land across the street and behind the house are owned by the city, giving added privacy.

“It’s a real walkable neighborhood. Down the hill is a community skateboard park and ... up above us is the Mutual Parklet with a basketball hoop and playground,” he said.

There are three bedrooms

on the second floor, all with hardwood flooring. In two bedrooms, the baseboards and window trim have their original stain. The third bedroom has white trim and would work as a home office.

The bathroom has a shower/tub combination, tile floor and an unusual ceiling line because of the gambrel roof.

The Dutch Colonial’s distinctive roof usually offers more usable space on the second and third floors. But there is no access to the attic.

Located in the Corliss section of Sheraden, the house is close to shopping, parks and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Sheraden. A bus

stop out front serves Downtown and goes to the Crafton Ingram shopping center.

“Geographic location is the thing. This place is minutes to Downtown. Go to the Strip [District] for shopping, 10 minutes away,” Bonwell said.

The property’s Allegheny County assessment is $58,500. Over the past three years, two houses have sold in the 1400 block of Jeffers Street: this one for $85,400 in June 2018 and one for $117,000 in June2019(www 2. allegheny county.
