1945 In a prerecorde­d radio address, Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced that his country had accepted terms of surrender for ending World War II.

1969 The Woodstock Music and Art Fair opened in upstate New York.

1996 Allegheny Ludlum, the largest maker of stainless steel in the United States, acquired Los Angeles-based Teledyne Inc., creating Allegheny Teledyne Inc. with corporate headquarte­rs in Pittsburgh.

2016 President Barack Obama, in Chilmark, Mass., urged Democrats to campaign aggressive­ly for the next 80 days to elect Hillary Clinton, saying that “if we do not do our jobs, then it’s still possible for her to lose.”
