Honolulu opens with LLWS win

Honolulu’s Ryan Keanu settled down after giving up a leadoff home run to pitch six strong innings to lead his team to a 9-1 victory against Connecticu­t to open the Little League World Series in South Williamspo­rt, Pa.

Keanu allowed just one hit after Arlen Peyman started the first game of the Little League World Series with a home run.

Keanu finished with no walks and seven strikeouts to earn the complete game victory.

More baseball

California scored four runs in the fifth inning and went on to a 10-2 win against New Hampshire. California was led by Elias Emerson, Isaac Mora and Andrew Nuruki, all driving in runs in the fifth.

• Hunter Nepple led Nebraska to a 5-2 win against New Jersey, allowing only two hits while striking out six in four innings.

• Ohio won its openingrou­nd game against Tennessee, 1-0, on a walk-off single by Chase Moak in the 8th inning.

• The Washington Wild Things (39-35) scored four runs in the seventh inning to rally for the 7-5 win against the visiting Erie Crushers (34-40). Tristan Peterson and Grant Heyman each had two RBIs and Brailin Jackson went 3 for 4 with an RBI in the win.

Hockey

The upcoming season will likely be the Arizona Coyotes’ final one at Gila River Arena. The city of Glendale announced it will not renew its agreement with the franchise beyond the 2021-22 season.

• Michigan defenseman Owen Power elected to return to school for his sophomore season rather than make the jump to the NHL after being selected with the No. 1 pick by the Buffalo Sabres in the recent draft.

Basketball

DeWanna Bonner scored a season-high 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Connecticu­t Sun beat the visiting Minnesota Lynx, 82-71, in the WNBA.

College

Amanda West became Pitt women’s soccer’s alltime leader in career goals with 24 as the Panthers opened their 2021 season with a 3-0 shutout victory at Tulsa in the BancFirst Cowgirl Soccer Invitation­al at Neal Patterson Stadium.

• Carnegie Mellon head football coach Rich Lackner announced his retirement for after the 2021 season. This season marks Lackner’s 36th year at the helm of the Tartans.
