Labor Day dog swims and a greyhound reunion
Allegheny County officials are inviting people to bring their dogs to “the best pool pawty” of the year. Pooches in the Pool 2021 on Sept. 6 is the day they let the dogs in at four county pools: North Park and the wave pools at Boyce Park, Settlers Cabin and South Park.
The Labor Day dog swims are 46:30 p.m.
Sept. 5 is the deadline to go to alleghenycounty.us and register online.
Admission cost is $20 per dog for residents and $25 for nonresidents. Up to two guardians can accompany each paying pet. Additional guests will be $5 per person. Only one dog per “guardian” is permitted.
Dogs must wear current tags displaying up-to-date vaccination information.
Greyhound reunion
The event formerly known as Going Home Greyhounds Annual Reunion Picnic is back this year on Sept. 19 in South Park.
The event is now The Pittsburgh Greyhound Gathering, and it’s scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. at the South Park Museum Building, 2100 Brownsville Road, South Park, 15125.
At 11:30 a.m., hounds assemble for The Great Global Greyhound Walk. That worldwide event was canceled last year due to the pandemic. In the case of the Pittsburgh portion of it, the event is a half-mile walk on the fairgrounds track.
The website notes that Going Home Greyhounds has been “bringing racing greyhounds home since 1995.” Total dogs adopted was more than 2,000 in 2012, according to the website, which does not list an updated tally.
People who bring greyhounds should not bring small dogs “for their own safety,” according to the news release.
Vendors will be selling things for dogs and the people who love them.
There will be games and activities, including an Ice Cream (yogurt) Social for the dogs. Baskets will be auctioned and 50/50 raffle tickets sold. Dogs will bob for hot dogs in a kiddie pool.
For further information or to make a donation for an auction basket, send an email to greyluvr@verizon.net or go to the goinghomegreyhounds. website or the group’s Facebook page.
