Robert Morris to honor Walton

Memorial service slated for Sept. 25

Robert Morris announced it will host a memorial service for Joe Walton after the 2021 football home opener Sept. 25, against Howard at Joe Walton Stadium.

The memorial service will also be streamed live on the RMU Athletics YouTube channel.

Walton was named the first head coach in RMU football history July 27, 1993, and spent 20 years as the head coach of the Colonials, claiming six Northeast Conference (NEC) titles during his tenure. He passed away Aug. 15, at the age of 85.

Baseball

Andrew Sohn went 2 for 4, and Bralin Jackson and Tristan Peterson each had one hit as the Washington Wild Things (43-36) were shutout, 1-0, on a four hitter by Tri-City ValleyCats (4038) pitching.

• Ryan Keanu got the 2-0 win for Hawaii against Michigan allowing just one hit over six innings, striking out three and walking none.

• South Dakota pitcher Gavin Weir tossed his second no-hitter at the LLWS to defeat California, 1-0. The left-hander lasted six innings striking out 14 and walking one.

• Carter Nelson threw a gem for Texas in besting Nebraska, 10-0. Dylan Regala led Texas to victory by driving in five runs.

• JJ Vogel was the winning pitcher for Ohio in the 4-3 win against New Hampshire. The left-hander lasted five innings, allowing one hit and two runs while striking out 11.

Soccer

Paris Saint-Germain said that Kylian Mbappe wants to leave the club and confirmed the French giants turned down an offer from Real Madrid.

Basketball

Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 27 points and Brittney Griner added 26 points, including her third dunk of the season, as visiting Phoenix (14-10) beat the New York Liberty (11-15), 106-79, in the WNBA.

Hockey

Finland scored three goals in the first period en route to a 4-0 win against ROC. It was their first win at the Women’s World Championsh­ip at WinSport Arena in Calgary.

• The Czechs finished the Group B preliminar­y round with a perfect 4-0 record with an impressive 2-0 victory against Germany.
