Mt. Lebo shuts out Bethel

In matchup of neighborin­g schools, Mt. Lebanon left no doubt as to who is the best on the block.

The Class 6A No. 3ranked Blue Devils began the season with a dominant 28-0 victory in a Week 0 non- conference game against Bethel Park.

Senior Joey Daniels completed 8 of 15 passes for 137 yards with a pair of 37yard scoring strikes to Mike Beiersdorf and Navy recruit Eli Heidenreic­h. Alex Tecza toted the ball nine times for 76 yards for Mt. Lebanon, which held a 172-43 advantage in yards rushing and a 309-188 edge in total yardage.

After going 0-7 last year, the Black Hawks have not won a game since 2019.

More Class 6A

Canon-McMillan 48, Trinity 0: The No. 5 Big Macs’ Ryan Angott got the best of Trinity by rushing for 162 yards on 18 carries. Angott scored on runs of 11 and 3 yards and also hauled in a 31-yard pass from Michael Evans for another score. Evans completed 9 of 12 passes for 175 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also found the end zone on a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter. The Big Macs scored all of their points within the first three quarters. Hempfield 29, Greensburg Salem 14: A big fourthquar­ter rally by the Spartans turned a tight game into a blowout. Hempfield trailed 14-7 heading into the final quarter before racking up 22 unanswered points. Gino Casar got the Spartans rolling with a 1-yard run to the end zone before Jake Phillips found Ian Tuffs on a 25yard touchdown pass. Eli Binakosky put the game away by bringing back an intercepti­ons 35 yards for the final score. Phillips went 14 of 24 for 187 yards. His counterpar­t Haden Teska threw for 319 yards with touchdown passes of 15 and 43 yards, however he was picked off three times.

Class 5A

Peters Township 37, Fox Chapel 0: The Indians, who have made an appearance in the WPIAL championsh­ip the past two seasons, look strong once again. They bolted to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to the nonconfere­nce triumph. No. 5ranked Peters Township collected 17 first downs compared to just four for the Foxes. The Indians also outgained the Foxes, 26352. Ethan Kirsch had five carries and made the most of them with three short touchdown runs. Logan King and Marcos Recker each had an intercepti­on for Peters Township.

Penn-Trafford 35, Norwin 14: Carter Green got No. 3 Penn-Trafford off to a great start with a 99-yard touchdown run on the first snap. The Warriors’ punishing ground game kept rolling from there, as Green scored again and Cade Yacamelli added another touchdown run.

South Fayette 35, Montour 7: A 21-point first quarter helped the Lions take control early. The balanced South Fayette offense saw Landon Lutz throw for 135 yards and Nate Deanes run for 95.

Gateway 26, Delaware Valley 10: The top-ranked Gators didn’t need to play a local team to prove they are the best in the WPIAL, scoring a comfortabl­e win against Delaware Valley, who is undefeated in conference play over the last two seasons.

North Hills 37, Mars 0: Liam Tracey carried 11 times for 130 yard, including a 76-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, to lead the Indians to a non-conference victory. Robert Dickerson hauled in a 37-yard pass for a score and also returned a punt 49 yards for another score.

Upper St. Clair 38, Greensburg Central Catholic 0: A matchup between a 5A team and a 1A squad went as expected. Ivory Travers and Jamaal Brown each ran for a score and Mateo Cepullio caught a scoring strike from Brady Erdos.

Latrobe 61, Derry 0: Big plays propelled the Wildcats to a big win over neighbor Derry. Bobby Fetter threw for 142 yards and two scores while Drake Clayton racked up 122 yards on the ground, including a 72-yard run to the house. Fetter also scored on a 50-yard run and Kyle Brewer brought back a punt 72 yards for another score before Ja’Tawn Williams picked off a pass and ran it back 45 yards for the final score.

Kiski 21, Butler 7: Cavaliers quarterbac­k Logan Johnson found the end zone on a 5-yard run and then later tossed a 49- yard touchdown pass to Matthew Hilty to help Kiski secure the non- conference win against Butler, a former WPIAL team now competing as an independen­t.
