FISHING REPORT

-

Lake Erie (Erie County): Fishing was tough last weekend with markers showing scattered walleye that wouldn’t take bait. Those that did went for crawler harnesses or spinners at 70-plus feet. Many anglers blamed barometric pressure and subtropical air spinning off Hurricane Henri, but some charter services reported client success in deep water between dawn and about 11 a.m. Steelhead occasionally were pulled from deep water. Lake trout continued to be caught between North East and Barcelona. N.Y. Isolated thunderstorms were predicted over the weekend.

Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): Northern pike went for spinners and jerkbaits in the bays, and walleye took crawler harnesses, spinners and spoons at 6-40 feet. Smallmouth bass were

caught on crankbaits and plastic worms.

Allegheny River (Warren County): Shore anglers landed muskellunge when using big lures or big live bait below the dam. Northerns took spinners and stickbaits off structure and grass, and smallmouths rose out of pockets to attack tube baits and jigs.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): By the light of a nearly full moon, two anglers boated nearly 90 crappies on minnow-tipped jigs between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Monday. A 24½-inch, 9-pound 5-ounce hybrid striped bass took a 1½-inch crappie bait and was brought in on an ultralight spinning rod strung with 6pound monofilament line.

Keystone Power Dam (Armstrong County): Good-size largemouth bass took soft plastics, crankbaits and live bait.

Yellow Creek Lake (Indiana County): Anglers caught Northerns, largemouths, catfish and crappies near the North Shore launch.

Blue Spruce Lake (Indiana County): A few largemouths

, bluegills and sunfish were taken.

Carnegie Lake (Allegheny County): Andy Hajek of Penn

Hills caught and released a largemouth bass Saturday. On Sunday, Rev. William Calhoun of Let’s Go Fishing presented Babella Porter, 7, of Penn Hills, with a kid-sized spincast rod in celebration of her upcoming fishing birthday party at Carnegie Lake. Let’s Go Fishing (www.pittsburghletsgofishing.club) is an urban angling club that promotes youth events at the Highland Park pond.

Ohio River (Allegheny County): Anglers reported fewer catfish hookups. Walleye remained active around dusk, particularly off and just inside tributary mouths.

Allegheny River (Allegheny County): Catfish and smallmouths were active off the North Shore wharf during Venture Outdoors’ lunchtime TriAnglers fishing program Wednesday. Tommy Lippert of Spring Garden landed and released a 16-inch flathead; other anglers caught bass. All were taken on worms. TriAnglers meets 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesdays under the Clemente Bridge. Participation is free, and fishing licenses are not required. Rods, live bait and instruction are provided. Get details at Venture Outdoors (www.ventureoutdoors.org) and 412-2550564.

Youghiogheny River (Fayette County): Recent rains discolored the water below Smithton, but anglers took rainbow and brown trout and smallmouth bass from Connellsville to Confluence.
