Wild Things sweep twinbill, cut magic number to 2

The Washington Wild Things swept a doublehead­er with Sussex County, 10-2 and 5-1, Monday at Skylands Stadium in Augusta, N.J., to reduce their magic number for clinching in the Frontier League’s Northeast Division to two with six games left to play.

In the opener, the Wild Things backed starter Ryan Hennen (11-3, 2.16 ERA) with 16 hits, including Andrew Czech’s 15th home run of the season and his first since July 31. The Wild Things piled on eight runs in the fourth, and Hector Roa picked up his 50th RBI of the season with a single.

In the second game, Nick Ward sparked the win with a two-run double in the third, and Roa moved atop the franchise’s RBI list with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, giving him 258 RBIs in his career, one more than Frontier League Hall of Famer Chris Sidick.

The No. 3 Pitt men’s team dropped its second road game of the season, falling to the No. 19 Akron Zips (4-0), 21, Monday night at FirstEnerg­y Stadium in Akron, Ohio. The Zips started the scoring on Dyson Clapier’s header from the corner of the box early in the first half. The Panthers (2-2) tied the score at 58:21 of the second half, as Raphael Crivello scored on a header off an assist from Filip Mirkovic. But Akron got the winning goal at 75:29, which Diogo Pacheco converted off a corner kick.

Soccer

Midfielder Weston McKennie is being sent back to Italy and will miss his second consecutiv­e World Cup qualifier after breaking U.S. team COVID-19 protocols. McKennie, among the leaders on the U.S. team, started Thursday’s opening 0-0 draw at El Salvador but was not allowed to be on the game-day roster for Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Canada. The 10thranked U.S. plays at No. 63 Honduras on Wednesday night.

• Four Argentina footballer­s are being investigat­ed by Brazil federal police for allegedly providing false informatio­n upon arrival in Sao Paulo for a World Cup qualifying match Sunday. The match was interrupte­d after seven minutes when agents of Brazil’s health agency, Anvisa, insisted they should take England-based players Emiliano Martinez, Emiliano Buendia, Giovanni Lo Celso and Cristian Romero to the airport for breaching coronaviru­s protocols. Anvisa said Argentina officials knew since Saturday that the four players should not play because they were in the United Kingdom 14 days before their arrival, but did not inform authoritie­s as required. Visitors from the U.K. must undergo a mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine.

• Pele has had an apparent tumor on the right side of his colon removed in an operation. Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo said the 80-yearold soccer great is in an intensive care unit and will be transferre­d to a regular room Tuesday. The operation was a “great victory,” Pele said on his social media channels.

• Jean-Pierre Adams, a former France and Paris Saint-Germain defender who spent 39 years in a coma, has died. He was 73. Adams, cared for by his wife Bernadette, has been lying in a coma at his home in the southern French city of Nimes since 1982. He was injured in a match and required knee surgery. During the operation at Lyon Hospital, an anaestheti­c error saw him fall into a coma.

Winter sports

Reigning world champion Kaillie Humphries was announced as part of this season’s USA Bobsled national team, even with her status for this winter’s Beijing Olympics remaining unclear because of passport issues. Lolo Jones, the Olympic hurdler-turned-bobsledder who pushed Humphries’ two-person sled on the way to a world championsh­ip last winter, also was selected for the national team.

Auto racing

Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas is leaving Mercedes at the end of the season and replacing the retiring Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo. Bottas signed a multiyear deal with Alfa Romeo, paving the way for George Russell to replace Bottas at Mercedes.

Pro basketball

The Chicago Bulls addressed a need in the frontcourt when they reportedly agreed to deals with freeagent forwards Stanley Johnson and Alize Johnson.
