Fox Chapel girls edge Bethel Park with PKs

Foxes goalkeeper McNaughton makes two saves to secure win

Fox Chapel and Bethel Park couldn’t find the back of the net in regulation or in two overtimes.

And in the shootout, Molly McNaughton made sure the Black Hawks couldn’t find it enough.

McNaughton, the Foxes junior goalkeeper, made two saves in the seven rounds of penalty kicks to help No. 9seeded Fox Chapel (9-7-1) pull out a 1-0 shootout victory over No. 8 Bethel Park (10-6-1) in the opening round of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs.

Fox Chapel will take on top-seeded North Allegheny at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Newman Stadium.

Butler 1, Mt. Lebanon 0: Samantha Miller scored the only goal of the match with 11 minutes remaining in regulation and Mackenna Yaracs made it stand with six saves as the seventhsee­ded Golden Tornado (133-2) edged the Blue Devils ( 9- 7- 2) to set up a date Thursday with secondseed­ed Moon.

Seneca Valley 6, PennTraffo­rd 0: Zoe Simpson scored two goals to help the Raiders (14-3-2) take a 3-0 lead at the intermissi­on and Virginia Fronk secured a shutout with three saves against the 13th- seeded Warriors (6-11-1).

Peters Township 4, PineRichla­nd 0: Jillian Marvin scored two goals, while Irene Doleno and Casey Breier each chipped in with one as the Indians (10-3-3) rolled past the Rams (5-10-0).

Norwin 5, North Hills 0: The Knights ( 13- 4- 0) got goals from five players as they rolled over the Indians ( 6- 12- 0) in a first- round matchup.

Class 3A girls

Kiski Area 2, Connellsvi­lle 1: Payton Buffone scored what turned out to be the winning goal with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation as 13th-seeded Kiski Area (10-9-0) pulled off the upset of the night, beating the No. 4 Falcons (14-40). Mary Kate Lape scored the only goal for Connellsvi­lle.

Mars 7, Penn Hills 0: Defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Mars ( 13- 0- 1) started its title defense on the right foot as Maddie Wolf scored what turned out to be the only goal the Planets needed just 90 seconds into the match against the Indians (9-8-1).

Oakland Catholic 5, Belle Vernon 1: Emily Cooper scored twice and limited the Leopards (15-4-0) to one goal on a penalty kick as the No. 8 Eagles (13-3-1) set up a date with Mars Thursday in the quarterfin­als.

Plum 7, Laurel Highlands 1: Cam Rogers scored three goals for the hat trick while Kaitlyn Killinger chipped in a goal and two assists to lead the No. 2 Mustangs (17-1-1) to the win over the Fillies (97-0).

Montour 8, Trinity 0: Grace Bannon started the scoring just 2:12 into the match for the first of her three goals and Saveria Ulizzi also contribute­d a hat trick to lead the No. 5 Spartans (13-6-0) to a romp over the Hillers

(10-7-0).

Franklin Regional 2, West Allegheny O: Abby Paterline got the Panthers (14-3-1) on the board with a minute left in the first half and Sydney Kranick added some insurance midway through the second in a win over the No. 14 Indians (610-2).

Class 2A boys

East Allegheny 2, Deer Lakes 1: Sophomore midfielder Ryan Nichol scored off a rebound 24 seconds into overtime as the 10th-seeded Wildcats (11-5-0) knocked out the defending WPIAL champion Lancers (8-5-1) in the first round.

Quaker Valley 5, Burrell 1: Ryan Edwards knocked home a hat trick and Keller Chamovitz netted two as the second-seeded Quakers (16 -2-0) knocked out the Bucs (7-8-0).

Charleroi 1, Keystone Oaks 0: Pitt recruit Eben McIntyre scored the only goal of the match with 2:34 remaining in the first half as the No. 4 Cougars (14-2-1) escaped with a victory over the 13th seeded Golden Eagles (10-7-0).

Elizabeth Forward 6, Mount Pleasant 1: Ethan Bowser continued his hot scoring as he finished with a hat trick and two assists as the Warriors (12-4-0) raced past the Vikings (8-9-2).

North Catholic 1, McGuffey 0: The Trojans (107-0) got the only goal they needed when Greggs Dylan set up Ryan Schantz to help No. 9 North Catholic (10-7-0) pull off the minor upset over the eighth-seeded Highlander­s (9-5-2).
