England destroys Latvia, 20-0, in women’s qualifier

The England women’s team posted the biggest win in its history Tuesday, routing Latvia, 20-0, in a World Cup qualifier in Doncaster, England.

There were 10 different scorers and four had hat tricks — including Ellen White, who became the team’s all-time leading scorer and now has 48 goals for her country. England beat Latvia, 10-0, in Riga in late October.

England’s previous biggest win was 13-0 against Hungary in 2005.

New York FC advanced to the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference final with a victory against the top-seeded New England Revolution on penalty kicks. After the match ended, 2-2, New York had a 5-3 advantage on penalty kicks.

•The Vancouver Whitecaps made interim coach Vanni Sartini their permanent head coach, and he agreed to a two-year deal through the 2023 season.

• The Kansas City Current acquired midfielder Sam Mewis from the North Carolina Courage in exchange for defender Kiki Pickett and a first-round pick in the upcoming National Women’s Soccer League draft.

• Ray Kennedy, a former England midfielder who won league titles with Liverpool and Arsenal, died at the age of 70. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1984.

• A Women’s World Cup qualifying game between the Czech Republic and Belarus was postponed after several players for Belarus tested positive for the coronaviru­s.

• German soccer club Leipzig canceled training Tuesday as the team’s coronaviru­s outbreak grew with more cases among the staff. Leipzig said only that there were “further positive corona cases” among the staff, without specifying how many.

• Jose Pekerman, a 72year-old Argentine who has coached teams in three World Cups, was hired to take over the Venezuelan national team.

Tennis

Germany came from behind to upset Britain in the Davis Cup quarterfin­als in Innsbruck, Austria, after Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz won the decisive doubles match. The German pair defeated Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski, 7-6 (10), 7-6 (5), after the teams split the two singles matches. In its first semifinal since 2007, Germany will meet Sweden or Russia on Saturday. Croatia will face either Serbia or Kazakhstan in the other semifinal.

Scott Carr was hired as Florida Internatio­nal’s athletic director, coming to the Panthers after nearly six years in the athletic department at UCF.
