RMU claims first win in league

Spear stars with double-double

The Robert Morris men won their first Horizon League game of the season on the strength of Kahliel Spear’s double-double, beating Northern Kentucky, 74-64, Saturday at UPMC Events Center.

Spear, a senior forward, finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds, making 8 of 13 shots from the field.

The Colonials (3-14, 1-7) shot 51.9% overall and made 17 of 18 free throws. Michael Green III added 14 points and Kam Farris had 13. Northern Kentucky fell to 6-9, 2-4.

Kansas 85, West Virginia 59: The No. 9-ranked Jayhawks (14-2, 3-1 Big 12 Conference) led just 33-31 at halftime but blitzed through the final 20 minutes, outscoring the Mountainee­rs, 52-28, to remain perfect against them in 10 matchups at home. They did it by piling up 23 assists, including a bunch on alley-oop dunks, and by building a 54-20 advantage in the paint. Malik Curry led West Virginia (13-3, 2-2) with 23 points, going 11 of 11 from the free-throw line. Jalen Bridges finished with 12. “In the second half, we came out flat,” Bridges said.

District women

Davidson 73, Duquesne 67: Tess Myers matched a career-high with 23 points, making 6 of 11 attempts from 3-point range, but a late rally from the visiting Dukes (6-10, 1-3 Atlantic 10 Conference) fell short. Duquesne led the Wildcats, 37-35, at the half, and started the third quarter on a 7-1 run to force a timeout. Davidson responded with 12 consecutiv­e points and led, 55-50, at the end of the quarter. The Wildcats (11-3, 2-0) took their largest lead at 66-54 with 5:43 to play before the Dukes went on a 10-0 run. A 3pointer from Megan McConnell with 44 seconds closed the Dukes’ deficit to 68-67. Davidson scored five consecutiv­e points on a 3-pointer and two free throws to end the game.

Texas 73, West Virginia 67: Aliyah Matharu scored 26 points to lead four in double figures for host No. 13 Texas (12-3, 2-2 Big 12). Ja’Naiya Quinerly and Kirsten Deans scored 19 points each for West Virginia (8-6, 1-3).
