POINT SHOTS

Chris Peters, who does a fine job covering the NHL draft and prospects for Daily Faceoff, has moved West Mifflin native and Pens Elite product Logan Cooley, pictured above, past Shane Wright to the top spot on his list of 2022 draft prospects. He’s not the only one who sees it that way. The local kid could go No. 1 overall in July.

Brother Kenny is happy Mike Matheson landed in Pittsburgh after a rough ending in Florida. “The move to Pittsburgh has really been great for him,” Kenny said. “His confidence was so low in Florida by the time he left. I’d watch him play and not even recognize him out there. That wasn’t him.” Kenny said Todd Reirden and the Penguins have Mike back playing on his instincts. He also thinks his little brother now has a better understanding of his strengths and weaknesses. He’s picking his spots

better, he said.

Mike Matheson and Chad Ruhwedel, pictured at left, had a nice stretch over the first three weeks of January, but there has been some slippage the past five games. Ruhwedel got walked by Washington’s Daniel Sprong on the tying goal in Tuesday’s loss. His play is something to monitor with the March 21 trade deadline looming.

Speaking of Penguins-Capitals, fans should be pulling for a first-round matchup between the two rivals. Not only might that be the last time we see Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin duke it out in the playoffs, that matchup favors the Penguins.

Both teams will definitely want to put off a meeting with the Hurricanes in the playoffs. As expected, the plucky, young Canes have been a juggernaut.

All-Star goalie Tristan Jarry hadsome sharp outings among his last 10 games, but the consistency hasn’t been there. He was so-so at best in five of them.

Coach Mike Sullivan said this past week that he feels Radim Zohorna, pictured at left, has the potential to be a regular in the top nine. I don’t know if I’d go that far. He turns 26 in April and may have already peaked. But he can certainly help in the short term, with Jason Zucker, Teddy Blueger and Drew O’Connor out.
