1763 Pontiac’s uprising against the whites brought all the inhabitant­s from the outside within the confines of Fort Pitt. Most of the surroundin­g homes were demolished.

1842 Dr. Crawford W. Long of Jefferson, Ga., first used ether as an anesthetic during an operation to remove a patient’s neck tumor.

1936 The National Guard was withdrawn, the Triangle was reopened.

1978 The state government authorized over $55 million in federal, state and local funds to pay for the first phase of the proposed East Busway in Allegheny County.

1987 At the 59th Academy Awards, “Platoon” was named best picture; Marlee Matlin received best actress for “Children of a Lesser God” and Paul Newman was honored as best actor for “The Color of Money.”

2010 President Barack Obama signed a single measure sealing his health care overhaul and making the government the primary lender to students by cutting banks out of the process.
