We here at goodness are feeling very good about our section winning a big state journalism award. In the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Foundation’s 2022 Keystone Professional Media Awards, goodness won the Reader Initiative Award, which “honors news companies that continue to accept the challenge of growing readership through innovative initiatives.” We figured into some other awards, including our Abby Mackey’s honorable mention for a group of stories in the “Diversity” category and designer Holly Artz’s second place in Features Page Design for a portfolio including our holiday story that our readers wrote, “What’s the greatest gift anyone has ever given you?” We’re hoping to be able to go to the October brunch in Harrisburg to hobnob with all the winners, from the PG and elsewhere, which you can see here: https://panewsmedia. professional-keystone

U.S. Veterans Affairs health care has services targeted just for women, and the word is getting out. The number of women veterans relying on the VA for health care has grown by 50% since 2017. You know the Pirate Parrot, but temporarily, the hometown baseball team has a new mascot: a cuddly service dog- intraining. After learning to socialize at games and acquiring other supportive skills, the “Pirates Pup” — made possible by the team, PNC and Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs — will find a FURever home with a local veteran, free of charge.
