Baseball, softball clinchings

-

Only a few days remain in the WPIAL baseball and softball regular seasons, and most of the playoff spots are filled.

Heading into Monday’s games, a total of 154 teams had clinched postseason spots — 79 in baseball and 75 in softball. Almost 20 baseball and softball teams are still alive for a playoff berth.

The top four teams in every baseball and softball section qualify for the postseason. Ties for playoff spots between two or more teams will be broken by head-to-head competition. If head-to-head games do not break the deadlock, all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

All softball teams must finish section play by Wednesday and baseball teams by Thursday. The WPIAL will release softball playoff pairings and seedings Thursday; baseball pairings and seedings will be released Friday.

The playoffs for baseball and softball will start May 16. The baseball championships are May 31-June 1 at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa.; the softball title games are June 1-2 at California University of Pa.
