CONCERTS: Back in the groove

- By Scott Mervis

With a little luck, those shows by Motley Crue, Rage Against the Machine, the Doobie Brothers and Kenny Chesney — all originally planned for 2020 — actually might happen.

After a 2020 concert year that ended in early March and a 2021 season that began in July, we seem to be back in the groove.

The Pavilion at Star Lake has 20 shows planned so far, and would have opened this weekend with Foo Fighters were it not for the tragic loss of drummer Taylor Hawkins. Instead, it will start on June 2 with Brad Paisley, one of five country headliners at the Burgettstown venue. Of the 20 headliners, just two — The Lumineers and Morgan Wallen — are headlining the venue for the first time.

There are a total of five shows at the North Shore stadiums, including Chesney’s 11th headlining visit and first show there since 2018. Getting their first looks at PNC Park are Metallica, Motley Crue and Elton John, on a farewell tour that started four years and will run through 2023.

PPG Paints Arena, which had a busy start to 2022, will host the tour opener for Roger Waters, along with a Beatle and the first Rage Against the Machine show in Pittsburgh since 1997.

Stage AE Outdoors opened early with a sold-out Girl Talk show and will offer such highlights as Bon Iver, our own The Commonheart, the Avett Brothers and an indie package with Interpol and Spoon.
